Summer Evenings

“The immensity of nature gives us a new perspective on life, washes away or minimizes our worries. How can we feel sad with all the beauty there to see? And how can we feel poor when all this beauty belongs to us?”

–  Ferenc Máté –

July brought long sun-drenched days, followed by lingering light, long after the sun slipped behind the horizon. It was for our work-sore bodies a welcome reprieve, as it seemed like a sin to toil in the golden light. It is a light reserved for glasses of cold vino verde, reflection, and conversation.

Now, back in Abu Dhabi, encased in our air-conditioned apartment, peering out our windows at the gentle blush of a dust-soaked sky, at the end of a day, we long for those seemingly endless bucolic hours. And the memory of an ever-changing sky.

** We spent two wonderful weeks at the end of July on our land, and although they were filled with many tasks, we also had time to enjoy some simple pleasures. Over the next couple of weeks/months, until we can return for a visit, I will share with you photographs, stories, and videos of our time there.

  1. Jolandi,

Stunning, I don’t blame you for stopping the work to just soak in the beauty of your land. I imagine you are looking forward to being there permanently. Thanks for sharing.

  2. You have found a very beautiful place to make your new home. I suspect it will get harder and harder to leave when you need to return to Abu Dhabi. I love that golden time in the evening!

    • So true, Clare. I suspect that once we have a comfortable house, returning to Abu Dhabi will be really difficult. For now though, I love returning to the comforts of life: a flushing toilet, running water inside the house, a washing machine . . . That said, we do miss the beauty and peacefulness of the land, when back in the city. For now, we funnel every bit of money we can spare, towards creating a livable space.
